How to label AI-generated content on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube (2026)

Updated October 18, 2026 · Reelsquad

The short version

When a label is required

The platforms use slightly different words, but the test is the same: would a viewer mistake this for real footage of real people or events? If yes, label it.

PlatformLabel required forNot required for
TikTokAI-generated or significantly edited content showing realistic-looking scenes or peopleMinor edits like colour correction or cropping, clearly artistic styles, generic text-to-speech
YouTubeAI-generated or altered content that seems realistic, including realistic scenes that didn't happen and real people made to say or do thingsUnrealistic or animated content, beauty filters, AI help with scripts, titles, thumbnails or captions
Instagram and FacebookPhotorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that was digitally created or altered, including with AIStill images are not covered by the requirement, though Meta may still label AI images it detects

A realistic AI presenter showing a product falls under all three descriptions, so treat AI creator videos as content that needs a label.

How to add the label: TikTok

  • In the app: tap +, record or upload, tap Next, open More options and turn on “AI-generated content”. For photos it's in Post settings. The label appears under the caption.
  • Through the Content Posting API: set post_info.is_aigc to true when initialising a Direct Post. The post then shows a “Creator labeled as AI-generated” tag.
  • TikTok also labels content automatically when it detects C2PA Content Credentials, or when the video was made with TikTok's own AI effects.
  • TikTok's FAQ says a label can't be edited or removed after posting, so decide before you publish.

How to add the label: YouTube and Shorts

  • In YouTube Studio (desktop or mobile), when uploading: Attributes → AI use → Yes. Older help pages call this the “altered content” setting.
  • Through the YouTube Data API: set status.containsSyntheticMedia to true on videos.insert or videos.update.
  • On Shorts the label shows as an overlay; on long videos it sits directly below the player. YouTube says a label on its own doesn't affect recommendations or monetization.

How to add the label: Instagram and Facebook

  • Meta asks people to disclose with its AI-disclosure option when sharing photorealistic AI video or realistic AI audio. Menu names change often, so look for the AI label option on the final screen before you share.
  • Instagram API: set is_ai_generated to true when creating the media container. For carousels, set it on the parent container only.
  • Facebook Pages Reels API: the video_reels endpoint accepts an is_ai_generated boolean to self-declare AI content.
  • Meta also labels content automatically when it detects C2PA or IPTC signals in the file.

What happens if you don't label

  • TikTok: unlabelled content “may be removed, restricted, or labeled by our team, depending on the harm it could cause.” Undisclosed AI in ads is rejected or restricted.
  • YouTube: creators who repeatedly fail to disclose may have a label added for them and may face removal or suspension from the YouTube Partner Program.
  • Meta: “there may be penalties for content shared without a label when it is required.” Meta generally labels rather than removes, unless the content breaks another policy.

AI creators and testimonials: what's legal

Labelling covers how content was made. It doesn't change what the content may claim. An AI person can present a product, explain it and show it in use. An AI person must never pose as a customer who bought and loved it.

  • United States: the FTC's rule on fake reviews and testimonials (16 CFR Part 465, in force since 21 October 2024) bans creating or disseminating testimonials that misrepresent that the person exists or used the product, and the FTC named AI-generated fake reviews specifically. The Endorsement Guides also require that people presented as actual consumers are actual consumers, or that this is clearly disclosed.
  • Canada: the Competition Bureau says anyone who writes or permits reviews that give a false or misleading impression can be liable, including social media testimonials, and that “there is no ‘AI exception’ to the law.” It also warns that labels alone may not be enough.
  • European Union: Article 50 of the AI Act requires deployers who publish deepfakes to disclose that the content is artificially generated or manipulated, clearly and at the first exposure. It has applied since 2 August 2026.

Safe pattern: AI presenters speak as presenters, real reviews are quoted word for word from real customers, and every post is labelled as AI-generated.

How Reelsquad handles this

  • Every video carries an on-screen “AI-generated” label in its first seconds and a disclosure line in the caption.
  • Posts are published with each platform's own AI flag: is_aigc on TikTok, containsSyntheticMedia on YouTube and is_ai_generated on Instagram and Facebook.
  • Creators present products and never claim personal experience; reviews are only quoted verbatim from the brand's real customers.

Questions

Do AI avatar or AI UGC videos need an AI label?

If the person on screen looks real, yes. TikTok, YouTube and Meta all require labels for realistic AI-generated people or scenes.

Does an AI label hurt reach?

YouTube says a label on its own doesn't affect recommendations or monetization. TikTok and Meta don't describe labels as a ranking penalty; the penalties they describe are for content that should have been labelled and wasn't.

Can an AI creator give a testimonial if the post is labelled as AI?

No. A testimonial claims real experience, which an AI person doesn't have. In the US and Canada fake testimonials are illegal whether or not they are labelled.

Can I remove an AI label later?

On TikTok, the official FAQ says no. On YouTube, labels added by YouTube's own AI tools or from fully generative C2PA metadata can't be removed by creators.
